Federal Government Extends Public Holidays For Eid-el-Fitr Celebration

In a move aimed at honoring the conclusion of Ramadan, the Federal Government of Nigeria has extended the public holidays for Eid-el-Fitr. Thursday, April 11, 2024, has been declared an additional public holiday for this purpose.

The announcement was made in a statement released by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and shared on the ministry’s official channels on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the decision to extend the public holidays was made to commemorate the Eid-el-Fitr festival, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In the statement, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, congratulated the Muslim Ummah for successfully completing a month of spiritual rejuvenation. He reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens.

The announcement comes after Saudi Arabia confirmed on Monday that the crescent of Shawwal, which signifies the end of Ramadan, had not been sighted. As a result, fasting continued on Tuesday, with Eid-el-Fitr celebrations set to take place on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, to mark the beginning of the new Islamic month.

Initially, the Federal Government had declared Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. However, with the extension to include Thursday, April 11, Nigerians will have additional time to observe and celebrate this significant religious festival.
