FCT Police Commissioner And Human Rights Lawyer, Adeyanju, To Help Man Who Attempted Suicide Start Business
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Bennett Igweh, and human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, have pledged to support Shaibu Yusuf, who recently attempted suicide, by providing funds to help him start a business.
Yusuf, in a bid to highlight the hardships faced by Nigerians, climbed a broadband mast at ASO Radio in Katampe, Abuja, ten days ago. After being referred for a mental assessment by the Social Development Secretariat, Yusuf was released on bail to Adeyanju on Thursday.
The release of the Borno-born Yusuf came after nine days, with Adeyanju confirming the development through a social media post. The post included photos of Adeyanju, Yusuf, Commissioner Igweh, and the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, at the FCT CP’s office.
The caption of Adeyanju’s post read: “We have secured the release of Shaibu Yusuf who protested by climbing a mast in Abuja after a week of back and forth. Let me appreciate the collaborative effort of FCT CP, Benneth Igwe, and FCT PRO, @Jossy_DANNYKING in this regard. CP Igwe and I are supporting Shaibu to start a POS business.”
The FCT Police Command deemed Yusuf’s mental assessment necessary due to his alarming action, which had caused significant concern. The incident attracted the attention of security and government agencies, including the FCT Emergency Department, who urged Yusuf to safely descend from the mast.
Upon his release, it was determined that Yusuf was not suffering from any mental illness but was instead dealing with severe personal and financial difficulties that led to his suicidal actions.
Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh explained that Yusuf’s dire living conditions prompted the FCT CP to assist him in starting a POS business to achieve financial stability and prevent future suicidal thoughts. While the results of Yusuf’s mental assessment are still pending, Adeh emphasized that his actions were a reflection of the country’s economic challenges.
