Enact Laws To End Off-Season Elections In Nigeria- Ex President Jonathan Urges NASS

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the National Assembly to pass a law to stop off-season elections in Nigeria.

The former President spoke after he voted in his hometown, Otuoke, Ogba LGA in the ongoing Bayelsa State governorship election.

“Off-season election is not the best global practice and the National Assembly must do something about it so that every State in Nigeria will do their election at the same time.

“If we continue with this trend of off-season elections based on interpretation of our laws by the judicial officers, a time will come when even the presidential election may be off-season,” the former President said.

He however appealed to the people in the three states where elections are ongoing to be peaceful in the discharge of their election duties.

Recall that while governorship elections were held in 28 out of the 36 states of the Federation in March 2023, elections in eight other states will come up on different dates because of court judgments.
