Ekpa Appoints New Lawyer Ahead Of June Terrorism Trial

Finland-based Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa has retained veteran Finnish lawyer Kaarle Gummerus to lead his defence at a June 2025 terrorism trial. Ekpa confirmed the change after his former counsel retired.
Ekpa’s June trial follows his November 2024 arrest in Lahti on charges of inciting violence via social media. Finnish police accuse him of promoting terror in southeastern Nigeria through online platforms. A Päijät‑Häme district court remanded Ekpa in prison pending trial.
His new lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, heads a prominent Helsinki law firm and specialises in criminal and human rights cases. Gummerus told reporters he has received the pre‑trial file and is “currently reviewing all case materials” in preparation for Ekpa’s defence.
Ekpa, who holds dual Nigerian and Finnish citizenship, faces allegations he spread “terrorist propaganda” from Finland between 2021 and 2024. Authorities claim Ekpa used social media to incite violence and unrest among IPOB followers in Nigeria.
Despite repeated Nigerian government requests for his extradition, Finland insists on prosecuting Ekpa under Finnish law. The Lahti court will hear the trial in June, charging him and five co‑accused in the same proceeding.
Nigerian officials designated Ekpa a terrorism financier in March 2025 under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, ordering the freezing of his assets in Nigeria. In response, the Nigerian Sanctions Committee directed banks to block funds tied to Ekpa and 15 others.
Ekpa’s appointment of Gummerus signals his intent to mount a robust defence. His supporters argue he advocates non‑violent self‑determination. Critics, however, warn his activities risk inciting unrest.
Gummerus stated, “We will ensure all legal rights are respected and challenge the evidence at trial.” The judge will confirm trial logistics and hear preliminary motions at Ekpa’s next court appearance scheduled for mid‑April.
