EFCC Vows To Investigate Tompolo Over Naira Abuse At Birthday Party

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has pledged to investigate ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, for alleged naira abuse.
Viral Video Sparks EFCC Probe
The EFCC made this known via a brief statement on its social media pages, declaring: “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer.”
This came after a viral video showed Tompolo being sprayed with ₦1,000 notes during his 54th birthday celebration in April 2025.
Public Reactions Fuel Controversy
Social media user Harrison A shared the footage with the caption, “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o.”
The clip quickly went viral, triggering outrage and accusations of selective enforcement by the anti-graft agency.
Spraying Money Violates Nigerian Law
Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 prohibits spraying or dancing on naira notes.
The law categorizes it as abuse and defacing of the naira, punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.
EFCC Cracks Down on Naira Abuse
The EFCC has consistently warned the public that spraying or mutilating the naira is a criminal offence.
In April 2024, a court sentenced Bobrisky to six months in prison for naira abuse at a public event.
Billionaire and Celebrities Also Under Scrutiny
Last month, authorities arrested Lagos billionaire Emeka Okonkwo, aka E-Money, for allegedly spraying both naira and US dollars at social functions.
Similarly, actress Iyabo Ojo and comedian Ayo Makun (AY) were recently questioned by the EFCC for comparable offences.
Iyabo Ojo Responds to EFCC Invitation
Iyabo Ojo confirmed her EFCC visit in a public statement, stating it related to a wedding where naira and foreign currencies were sprayed.
She visited the EFCC office on May 5, 2025, and answered questions about her career, businesses, and the viral wedding video.
AY Denies Arrest Rumours
Comedian AY also acknowledged his invitation by the EFCC but dismissed claims that he was arrested.
He clarified, “You can’t be arrested and still have your phone. An EFCC invitation is not an arrest.”
EFCC’s Tough Stance on Naira Defacement
This renewed investigation into Tompolo reflects the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on naira abuse at public events.
The agency maintains that all Nigerians, regardless of status, must respect the law governing Nigeria’s currency.
