EFCC Calls For Greater Involvement Of Lawyers, CSOs In Anti-Corruption Efforts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and civil society organizations (CSOs) to strengthen their engagement in the fight against corruption.
This appeal was made on Thursday, March 27, 2025, by the Acting Director of the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, Bawa Usman Kaltungo, during a courtesy visit by leaders of the Barnawa and Kaduna branches of the NBA, along with representatives of the Corruption Trackers Initiative (CTI), North West Zone.
“The EFCC cannot combat corruption alone. The active participation of professional bodies such as the NBA, CSOs, and the general public is crucial to winning the battle against corruption in Nigeria. We appreciate your commitment to this cause and encourage even greater involvement for the good of our nation. Our doors remain open to all stakeholders in this fight,” Kaltungo stated.
He also emphasized the importance of ethical conduct among those involved in anti-corruption efforts, warning against actions that could undermine their credibility.
“Integrity must be upheld at all times. Those who seek justice must themselves be beyond reproach. Always execute your duties lawfully and maintain credibility in the fight against corruption,” he added.
Leaders of the visiting delegations reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with the EFCC, recognizing the partnership as essential for societal progress.
Hamza Abideen, Executive Chairman of CTI, North West Zone, acknowledged the EFCC’s achievements in combating corruption, which he said inspired the creation of CTI as a voluntary anti-corruption movement. “Our participation in this fight is a means of supporting the nation by eradicating corruption and financial crimes, creating a foundation for societal development,” he said. He also commended the EFCC for its dedication despite numerous challenges over the years.
Bukola Ajao, Chairman of the NBA Barnawa Branch, and Godwin O. Ochai, Chairman of the NBA Kaduna Branch, expressed their full commitment to the anti-corruption fight.
They emphasized the need for synergy between the EFCC and the NBA to ensure that corrupt individuals and those involved in financial crimes face justice.
While congratulating Kaltungo on his appointment as Acting Zonal Director, the NBA leaders assured him of the cooperation of lawyers from both branches in advancing the anti-corruption cause.
