The African Bar Association (AfBA) has paid a formal courtesy visit to Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The visit took place on July 9, 2025, at the Ministry of Justice headquarters in Abuja.

The AfBA delegation, which comprised of Executive and Council members, was led by its President, High Chief Ibrahim E. Mark, and included high-ranking officials such as Mohammed Ndayako, SAN, Vice President (Finance) and Governing Council Member; Prof. Agbo Madaki, Council Member; Afamefuna Okeke, Director of Budget and Council Member; Owoicho David Adejo-Ogiri, Director of Membership (Nigerian Forum); and Chinelo Audrey Ofoegbunam, Secretary of the Women Forum.

During the meeting, AfBA President High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark congratulated the Attorney General on his merit based appointment and also, his son’s call to the Nigerian Bar, which occurred on the same day. He also thanked the Attorney General for his continued support for the association.

One of the key purposes of the visit was to formally inform and invite the Attorney General to the 2025 AfBA Annual General Conference. The event is scheduled to hold in Accra, Ghana, from October 19 to 23, 2025, and is expected to attract over 600 legal professionals from across Africa. The AfBA President specifically requested the Attorney General’s participation as a panelist during the conference. The Attorney General warmly accepted the invitation and assured the delegation of his attendance.

The AfBA team also appealed to the Minister for support in sponsoring legal officers from the Ministry to attend the event. Additionally, discussions touched on the future of the AfBA Secretariat in Nigeria, which was leased to the association over two decades ago.

The courtesy visit was described as productive, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to promoting legal excellence and continental cooperation through the AfBA platform.
