Adejuwon Soyinka, the Regional Editor for West Africa at The Conversation Africa and the founding Editor of the BBC Pidgin Service, was reportedly arrested by officers of the Department of State Security (DSS) in Lagos.

Soyinka was taken into custody at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos around 5:40 a.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024, shortly after arriving in Nigeria on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.

A close friend of Soyinka, who requested anonymity, disclosed the arrest to journalists, saying, “DSS officers detained Adejuwon Soyinka at Murtala Muhammed International Airport shortly after his arrival from the United Kingdom on Sunday morning.”

As of this report, the DSS has not provided any explanation for Soyinka’s detention, and all attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful.
