DISCLAIMER: NBA Disowns “Lawyers” Protesting For Yahaya Bello

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has responded to a report by The Nation Newspaper on Monday 22nd of April, 2024 claiming that hundreds of lawyers rallied at the Supreme Court to protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) actions regarding former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello.
According to The Nation, the group, led by one S.K Alewu, condemned the EFCC’s alleged attempt to arrest Bello in defiance of a court order. They accused the EFCC of violating Bello’s rights and undermining the judiciary’s integrity.
The purported lawyers called on the National Judicial Council and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain the EFCC from disobeying court orders.
However, the NBA has clarified that the individuals mentioned in the report are not members of the legal profession. The association emphasized its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that accurate information is disseminated to the public.
Furthermore, the NBA stated that Sylvanus K. Alewu, purportedly identified as the group’s leader, is not a name known to the Nigerian Bar Association.
While acknowledging citizens’ right to protest, the NBA underscored the importance of verifying facts and urged caution in accepting unverified reports.
