Disability Rights Advocacy Gains Momentum In Kaduna

Efforts to promote the rights and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in Kaduna State have received a boost as The BEACON of Transformative and Inclusive Development Centre partners with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and the Kaduna State Disability Affairs Board.
During a joint courtesy visit to the Disability Affairs Board on Monday in Kaduna, Abigail Olatunde, Executive Director of The BEACON, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to inclusive development and emphasized the importance of quality education for PwDs.
Olatunde highlighted The BEACON’s ongoing efforts in disability rights advocacy, particularly in supporting marginalized and vulnerable groups across the state.
“We are committed to ensuring that PwDs have access to equal opportunities, particularly in education and legal protections,” she said.
As part of its initiatives, The BEACON has commenced sign language training for board members, with plans to extend training to stakeholders on effective communication with deaf individuals and other PwDs.
The visit also aimed to strengthen collaboration between The BEACON and the Kaduna State Disability Affairs Board while introducing FIDA’s role in legal advocacy for PwDs.
Discussions during the visit focused on enhancing legal and social protections for PwDs, addressing key challenges, and identifying opportunities for stronger disability rights and justice.
Olatunde stressed the need to bolster legal support, policy advocacy, and disability-focused interventions to create a more inclusive society.
“Our partnership with FIDA and the Disability Affairs Board is a crucial step towards ensuring that the rights of PwDs are protected and upheld,” she added.
The collaboration marks a significant milestone in advancing disability rights in Kaduna State, paving the way for greater inclusion and accessibility for all.
