Delta, Rivers, And Nasarawa Excel In Implementing Criminal Justice Laws
In a significant milestone for judicial reform in Nigeria, Delta, Rivers, and Nasarawa states have emerged as leaders in the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws (ACJLs). This achievement was highlighted at a recent convocation of the administration of criminal justice monitoring committees (ACJMCs), which brought together key stakeholders to assess progress and reinforce judicial reforms.
Delta State topped the list with an impressive 90.9% compliance score, followed closely by Rivers State at 85%, and Nasarawa State at 82%. Their commitment to criminal justice reform was recognized with awards, including new laptops and workstations for their respective ACJMC secretariats.
Key Highlights and Commitments
Efficiency and Innovation: The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Husseini Baba Yusuf, emphasized the importance of efficiency in case management and sustained innovation in justice administration. He noted that the convocation serves as a platform to assess progress, discuss challenges, and drive reforms for a more effective and transparent criminal justice system.
Government Support: The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, represented at the event, commended the ACJMCs for promoting judicial efficiency and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to legal reforms and ensuring nationwide compliance with the ACJA/ACJL.
Police Collaboration: The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), represented at the event, reaffirmed the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to collaborating with ACJMCs to improve law enforcement operations and uphold public trust.
Anti-Corruption Efforts: Representatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) highlighted key achievements in anti-corruption efforts since the adoption of the ACJA. They pledged continued cooperation with ACJMCs to strengthen Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and promote fair trial standards.
National Minimum Standards: The convocation also saw the launch of the national minimum standard document on ACJA/ACJL implementation by the Chief Judge of the FCT. This document provides a benchmark for uniformity in criminal justice processes across Nigeria, reinforcing the objective of delivering justice efficiently and equitably.
The executive secretary of the ACJMC, Evbu Igbinedion, expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their contributions and emphasised the shared commitment to justice sector improvements. With continued collaboration and strategic reforms, Nigeria aims to build a system that delivers fairness, transparency, and efficiency in its criminal justice processes.
