Defence Minister Hails Emergency Rule In Rivers, Blames Governor Fubara

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, strongly backs President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. He insists that the move is necessary to restore stability amid the ongoing political crisis.
Matawalle emphasised that the emergency rule aims to address governance challenges and protect the welfare of Rivers residents.
Matawalle cited Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s demolition of the House of Assembly complex as a key factor in the political impasse. He said that the move left the state without a functioning legislature for over 14 months.
“The absence of a legislative arm has significantly hindered governance,” the statement noted, adding that the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed the necessity of a functioning legislature and condemned the governor’s actions as unconstitutional.
The minister also expressed concerns over rising vandalism and threats from militants. He warned that the Nigerian Military is on high alert to prevent further disruptions.
“The Federal Government remains committed to the safety of citizens and the protection of government infrastructure in Rivers State,” the statement read.
Matawalle warned that any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a firm response from security forces.
He urged political stakeholders to embrace the emergency rule as a chance for renewed cooperation and governance. Matawalle expressed hope that the intervention would lead to long-term peace and stability in Rivers State. He noted that this will ensure a democratic environment for all residents.
