Court Remands Principal, Broadcaster, And Ooni’s Ex-Wife Over Ibadan Stampede
A Chief Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of three individuals connected to the tragic stampede at Bashorun Islamic High School, which claimed multiple lives during a children’s funfair.
The accused include Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, the school’s principal; Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM, which publicized the event; and Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who allegedly sponsored the event.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi issued the remand order on Tuesday, December 24, following their arraignment by the Oyo State Police Command.
The defendants face a four-count charge under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000, which relates to criminal negligence and other offenses tied to the incident.
The police prosecutor detailed the allegations, asserting that the negligence and actions of the accused contributed to the stampede, which resulted in fatalities and injuries.
Chief Magistrate Ogunkanmi directed that the trio be held at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending further advice from the state prosecutor.
The stampede occurred during a highly anticipated funfair organized at Bashorun Islamic High School. Eyewitness accounts suggest overcrowding and poor crowd management led to the tragedy, sparking public outcry and calls for accountability.
Authorities have vowed to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice, as families of the victims demand answers and justice for their loved ones.
