Court Remands 24-Year-Old For Allegedly Killing Grandfather And Uncle In Ibadan

A Magistrates’ Court in Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of a 24-year-old man, Nurudeen Hammed, in a correctional facility for allegedly killing his grandfather and uncle. The tragic incident took place in the Apete area of Ibadan on September 8, 2024.

Hammed, who is facing a two-count charge of murder, did not enter a plea, as Magistrate Oluwabusayo Osho explained that the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case. She directed that the case file be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and adjourned the matter until November 12, 2024, for further mention.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Olalekan Adegbite, Hammed is accused of unlawfully causing the deaths of his 80-year-old grandfather, Jimoh Oyekola, and his 46-year-old uncle, Semiu Oyekola. The prosecutor explained that Hammed had a history of stealing from his grandfather’s house, and on the day of the incident, he allegedly attacked his family members when they attempted to stop him.

Adegbite told the court that Hammed strangled his grandfather and then struck his uncle in the jaw with a power bank when the latter tried to intervene. Both men succumbed to their injuries.

The charges brought against Hammed are in violation of Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000, which pertain to murder and homicide. The court will continue to await legal advice from the DPP as the case progresses.
