Court Grants ₦500,000 Bail To House Of Reps Member Ikwechegh In Assault Case

A Kuje Magistrate Court has granted bail to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North and South, on a ₦500,000 bond, alongside two sureties. Presiding Judge Abubakar Sai’id specified that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present utility bills for verification.

Ikwechegh faces charges of abuse of office, assault, and threat to life following an alleged incident involving an e-hailing cab driver. He pleaded not guilty, and his counsel successfully filed an oral application for bail. The case has been adjourned to November 8, 2024.

The allegations stem from an encounter where Ikwechegh, seen in a viral video, allegedly slapped Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya during a delivery. In the video, Ikwechegh purportedly expressed anger over delivery arrangements, threatening to “make this man disappear in Nigeria” after a disagreement escalated. The video shows Ikwechegh admitting to slapping Abuwatseya and daring him to retaliate.

The House of Representatives has urged the public to await the outcome of the police investigation, with the FCT Police Command questioning Ikwechegh on the matter. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to demand accountability and justice in the case.
