Cleric Seeks N497m Damages From Human Rights Radio Over ‘Defamatory’ Broadcast
Joy Ebere, a cleric, has announced that her family has initiated legal proceedings against Ahmad Isah, a human rights campaigner, and his organization, Brekete Family, over alleged defamation. The lawsuit seeks damages amounting to N497 million, including legal fees.
During a press conference in Abuja, Ebere detailed the events leading up to the lawsuit. On June 8, during a live broadcast on Human Rights Radio, she was accused of being a “child abuser” without being given an opportunity to present her side of the story.
“Mr. Iyke, Ahmad Isah, and their clients tarnished my name and brand, which I have spent over 40 years building, without conducting a proper investigation that included my side of the story. They never at any time reached out to me to get my perspective or properly investigate the story before airing it live for the first time on June 8, 2024,” Ebere stated.
Following the initial broadcast, the program invited Ebere to appear on a second episode. However, she declined, citing the lack of fairness and trust in their investigative process. Instead, she sent a written response to be read on air, which she claims was ignored.
“In that letter, I informed them of the unprofessional nature of their conduct, my innocence, and my openness to cooperate with any agencies that can properly investigate this case. Because I am innocent and have evidence of my innocence, I am not afraid of scrutiny from institutions that are impartial and interested in ascertaining the truth,” she explained.
Despite her efforts, Ebere alleges that Ahmad Isah and Mr. Iyke continued to damage her reputation in subsequent broadcasts.
In response, Ebere’s family has petitioned various agencies, including the Inspector General of Police, State Security Services, and NAPTIP, seeking justice and the protection of her rights.
The lawsuit underscores the critical need for media responsibility and the potential consequences of failing to uphold professional standards in broadcasting.
