CJN Urges Judges To Uphold Ethics And Independence In Justice Delivery

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has called on judges of lower courts to uphold integrity and ethics.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during the induction of new magistrates and judges of sharia, area, and customary courts, the CJN said judicial independence remains vital. Justice Chidiebere Uwa represented CJN Kekere-Ekun at the event.

The National Judicial Institute (NJI) organised the event to enhance the quality of justice delivery in Nigeria’s lower courts.

The CJN reminded judges that public trust in the judiciary depends on their impartiality and ethical conduct in all matters.

She said, “Avoid bias or undue interest. Uphold high standards of professionalism and guard your integrity jealously.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun urged the judges to seek advice from senior colleagues, but noted that final decisions must reflect independent judgment.

She warned that delays in court processes continue to undermine the effectiveness of the justice system across the country.

“Persistent trial delays weaken public confidence. We must adopt efficient practices to improve timely delivery of justice,” she said.

The CJN advised greater use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to ease the burden on regular court procedures.

She also emphasized that judges must consider the social and economic context of each case, not just legal technicalities.

The CJN encouraged newly inducted judges to remain guided by the constitution and to ensure justice is delivered fairly and swiftly.

Meanwhile, NJI Administrator, Justice Salisu Abdullahi (rtd), reminded judges of the important roles they play at the grassroots.

He said their decisions directly affect public perception of the judiciary and its commitment to fairness and integrity.

The CJN and NJI officials both stressed the importance of continued training for judges to meet rising demands of judicial service.

The theme of the induction was “Enhancing Judicial Efficiency and Quality of Decision Making.”
