CJN Approves Online Applications For Lawyers Seeking Notary Public Status

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has approved online applications for lawyers seeking appointment as Notary Public. The approval, announced Wednesday in Abuja, represents a significant reform in the nation’s legal system.

According to Festus Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, the decision marks a landmark shift. He explained that the judiciary’s embrace of digital technology reflects its commitment to efficiency, transparency, and greater accessibility for legal practitioners.

Previously, the appointment process for Notary Public was paper-based and time-consuming. However, the CJN’s directive has now streamlined the procedure through a digital portal. The portal, available at https://notary.gov.ng, enables lawyers to submit their applications electronically.

Akande stated that the platform is user-friendly and carefully designed to guide applicants step by step. Therefore, applicants can enjoy a seamless process that minimizes delays and reduces administrative burdens. He added that this reform would ensure faster reviews and approvals for qualified lawyers.

Furthermore, the CJN’s approval signals a new era of modernization within the judiciary. By shifting to digital platforms, the Supreme Court demonstrates its resolve to adapt to global best practices. Consequently, lawyers seeking Notary Public appointments can now access a transparent and efficient system.

Notaries Public are appointed by the CJN to serve as officers of the Supreme Court. Their responsibilities include witnessing signatures, administering oaths, and certifying the authenticity of contracts, deeds, and other legal documents. These functions are vital for legal, business, and international transactions.

This reform underscores the judiciary’s readiness to integrate technology into core processes. It also highlights the CJN’s commitment to fostering innovation while reducing bureaucratic challenges.

With this move, lawyers across Nigeria now have an accessible and secure pathway to attain Notary Public status, reinforcing confidence in the justice system.
