The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Hon. Justice Muhammad Lawal Uwais, GCON, former Chief Justice of Nigeria. He died on Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of judicial excellence and electoral reform.
In a statement signed by NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the association described Justice Uwais as the “conscience of the Bench” and a true reformer. He served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006, making him the second-longest-serving Chief Justice in Nigeria’s history.
During his tenure, Justice Uwais championed judicial independence and ethical discipline. He authored several landmark judgments that strengthened constitutional law and protected civil rights in Nigeria. The NBA noted that his clarity of thought and firm commitment to justice made him a model jurist.
Justice Uwais continued his national service even after retirement. In 2007, he chaired the Electoral Reform Committee, where he proposed bold reforms. These included unbundling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), creating an Electoral Offences Commission, and insulating key appointments from political influence. The NBA emphasised that these ideas remain central to Nigeria’s electoral reform efforts.
The NBA said Justice Uwais exemplified integrity, scholarship, and devotion to national progress. He etched his legacy as a fearless jurist and reformer into the country’s legal and democratic history.
The NBA and the wider legal community have lost a rare icon whose impact will endure. The association offered prayers for the Uwais family and urged the nation to honor his life by upholding justice and reform.
Justice Uwais will be remembered for his service to law, nation, and humanity. The NBA joins the nation in mourning his loss.
