CAC Will No Longer Register Schools As Business Names

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has said that it will no longer approve or register schools, academies and such other institutions as business names.

In a circular from the Registrar General dated 4th of March and addressed to all approving officers of the Commission, it was stated that an institution is essentially a body corporate with perpetual succession, capable of contracting and (subject to such restrictions as may be imposed by other laws) issuing certificates in its own name. These attributes it said, are absent in a business name.

Prior to this development, schools and other institutions could be registered as business names and operate with approval from the Ministry of Education.
