Buckingham University Vice-Chancellor Suspended Amid Allegations Of Misconduct

The University of Buckingham has suspended its Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Tooley, following allegations of misconduct, including claims of a romantic relationship with a younger woman. The allegations were raised by his estranged wife, Cynthia Tooley, a Nigerian businesswoman.

According to UK media reports, Cynthia submitted what she claimed were diaries of a 25-year-old Indian woman to university authorities. These documents allegedly detailed a romantic relationship with the vice-chancellor.

The couple, who married in February 2022 after a brief courtship, separated earlier this year. Communication between them has since been through lawyers. The situation escalated on October 11, when Cynthia formally notified the university about the alleged affair, prompting an emergency meeting and Tooley’s subsequent suspension.

Cynthia also accused Tooley of possessing a “suspicious object” at his university residence. Authorities removed a junior air rifle from the property, although no further action was taken.

In a letter to students, the university confirmed the suspension and announced the formation of an interim leadership team to oversee operations while an independent inquiry is conducted. The letter acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and assured the university community that the matter is being handled with due diligence.

Professor Tooley has denied all accusations, describing them through his legal team as “baseless and malicious.” He expressed confidence that the inquiry will clear his name.

The Indian woman at the center of the allegations also defended Tooley, describing him as “kind and thoughtful” and insisting their relationship was consensual and legal. She added, “Anyone who reads my diaries can see I was in love with him.”

The high-profile nature of the case, involving a prominent academic figure and publicized personal conflicts, has drawn significant media attention. Cynthia, who previously resided with Tooley at his official residence, has since moved out.

The investigation continues, with the university emphasizing its commitment to a fair and thorough review of the allegations.
