‘Bring Me My Prophet Offerings,’ Farotimi Declares After Afe Babalola Drops Defamation Charges
Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has reacted with a cryptic remark following the withdrawal of a defamation charge against him by legal luminary, Afe Babalola (SAN).
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Farotimi wrote: “Nigeria!!! Bring me my prophet offerings.” His statement appears to reference a post he made six years ago about the triumph of justice, in which he declared:
“There’s a shaking afoot, and a separation of the wheat from the chaff. Men shall be tested and assayed, but surely I declare unto the conscious: discountenance the gathering clouds, the righteous shall prevail, accompanied by justice shall reign.”
Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, had initiated criminal defamation proceedings against Farotimi over allegations made in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, where the activist accused him of judicial corruption. The case resulted in Farotimi spending 21 days in prison custody.
However, according to reports, traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, mediated in the dispute, leading Babalola to withdraw the charges.
Farotimi’s latest statement, invoking the Christian practice of presenting offerings to prophets, suggests he views the case’s resolution as a vindication of his stance.
