Breaking Barriers: Women Lawyers In India Tackle Persistent Gender Bias

Despite strides in gender equality, women in India’s legal profession continue to face entrenched discrimination. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Hima Kohli, speaking at an event marking “100 Years of Women in Law,” emphasized that no woman has yet held the role of Attorney General or Solicitor General, underscoring the ongoing lack of representation in top legal positions.

Justice Kohli highlighted the stereotypes that undermine female lawyers’ authority and limit their opportunities. Although there has been some progress in the representation of women within higher legal roles, the numbers remain disproportionately low in courts across many states, failing to reflect broader demographics in the profession.

To combat these challenges, Justice Kohli calls for societal support, advocating for awareness initiatives, policy reforms, and equal pay legislation to dismantle the barriers facing women in law.
