Benchers Honour Wike For Judicial Infrastructure Contributions

The Body of Benchers has honoured FCT Minister Nyesom Wike with an Award of Excellence for his contributions to judicial infrastructure.
During a visit to Wike’s Abuja residence on March 28, 2025, Chairman Adegboyega Awomolo led a delegation, including Vice Chairman Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
Awomolo described Wike as a “worthy ambassador” of the legal profession, recognising his role in improving judicial welfare. He cited Wike’s projects, such as accommodations for judicial officers in Abuja and Rivers State and the new Body of Benchers office annex in the FCT.
Wike reaffirmed his commitment to judicial development, explaining that projects like the Abuja Court of Appeal and Judges’ Quarters followed budgetary approvals from President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly. He highlighted fiscal responsibility in allocating funds, including provisions for Nigerian Law School hostels in the 2025 budget.
Addressing concerns about land revocation, Wike defended FCTA policies, denying political bias. He pointed to the PDP headquarters case, stating the title was not registered in the party’s name and had 23 years of unpaid ground rent. He stressed that institutions such as INEC and the CBN also faced revocation threats until they cleared outstanding debts.
The Benchers briefed Wike on efforts to digitise court proceedings and support young lawyers, aligning with broader judicial modernisation plans. Awomolo urged continued collaboration, while Wike pledged ongoing support for initiatives that enhance legal practice.
The award highlights growing cooperation between government and legal institutions in strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary. Awomolo noted that Wike’s active participation in the Body of Benchers aligns with President Tinubu’s vision for institutional excellence.
The delegation included former Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kayode Ariwoola, former FCT High Court Chief Judge Justice Ishaq Bello, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Joe Kyari Gadzama.
