Benjamin Mendy Wins Legal Dispute Over Unpaid Wages Against Manchester City
Benjamin Mendy has emerged victorious in his legal battle against Manchester City, securing approximately £11 million in unpaid wages. The French defender, who had faced serious allegations, including six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, was acquitted after a lack of sufficient evidence.
During the legal proceedings, Manchester City suspended Mendy’s pay, arguing that he was unable to perform his professional duties. This led to significant financial strain on Mendy, forcing him to sell his Cheshire home and seek financial assistance from former teammates to manage legal expenses, bills, and child support.
Following the tribunal’s decision, Mendy is set to receive the majority of his unpaid salary, though not the full amount. The exact sum will be determined through either negotiation with the club or a future hearing if an agreement is not reached.
Summarizing the ruling, the tribunal stated, “Mr Mendy will be entitled to receive the majority of his unpaid salary, although not all of it.” Judge Joanne Dunlop highlighted that Mendy had spent around five months in custody out of the 22-month period cited in his claim, during which Manchester City was legally allowed to withhold his salary.
