Anambra Lawmaker Discloses Salary As House Of Representatives Member
In a recent interview with Channels TV, Hon. Uzokwe Ifeanyi, representing Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in Anambra State, disclosed his monthly salary as a member of the House of Representatives. During the discussion on the implementation of a 50% salary cut approved in July, Ifeanyi revealed that he earns N936,000 per month.
Ifeanyi clarified that elected officials do not determine their own salaries, likening the process to changes in fuel subsidies that require documentation and time for implementation. He emphasized the transparency of the current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, highlighting the openness of their plenary sessions and the absence of secrecy.
“I earn N936,000 as my July salary. We approved a 50% cut in July, but the implementation process takes time. We do not pay ourselves. It is similar to the president announcing the removal of fuel subsidies; implementation doesn’t happen immediately. If the president decides to reduce fuel prices, it also requires a process and documentation,” Ifeanyi explained.
He acknowledged his lack of expertise regarding the specific procedures involved in the salary reduction process but noted that it was initiated around mid-July and will take time to be fully executed.
“The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has made our plenary sessions very open. He doesn’t hide anything. The salary cut was made in mid-July, and I am not familiar with the exact processes that will follow,” he added.
Ifeanyi’s remarks highlight the commitment to transparency and the gradual implementation of the salary cut within the legislative framework.
