Amaechi Condemns Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers, Slams National Assembly’s Weakness

Former Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly breaching the constitution by removing Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

He described the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as unconstitutional and illegal.

Amaechi, speaking at the Akinjide Adeosun Foundation’s Annual Leadership Discourse in Lagos, said the National Assembly failed to defend democratic principles.

Constitution Violated, Not Just Laws

Amaechi argued that President Tinubu didn’t just break laws-he violated the Nigerian Constitution, which he called “the Bible of the nation.”

He claimed the president unilaterally removed a democratically elected governor and replaced him with a retired military officer.

“The nation remained silent despite this breach,” Amaechi lamented, questioning the country’s commitment to constitutional governance.

Weak Institutions Enable Abuses

He blamed the National Assembly for enabling the alleged abuse of power, calling it “a weak institution.”

He said fearless leadership becomes necessary only when leadership fails, adding, “Good governance depends on law, not whims.”

Nigerians Must Reject Docile Followership

Amaechi called on Nigerians to stop being passive. “Docility enables bad leadership,” he said.

He emphasized the need for citizens to uphold the rule of law and demand accountability.

Agbaje and Others Call for Enabling Environment

Former PDP governorship candidate Jimi Agbaje argued that fearless leadership can only thrive in an enabling environment.

“If I speak truth to power, my family should still have healthcare and education,” he noted.

Agbaje said fear persists because systems fail to protect those who speak out.

Leadership Must Drive Basic Progress

Event convener Akinjide Adeosun said fearless leadership can improve basic life conditions like electricity, water, and security.

He called for a shift “from bad to good, good to great, and great to excellent.”
