Akwa Ibom Pushes For Child Rights Law Review, Councils Win N155m Christmas Fiesta Prize

The Akwa Ibom State Government is set to advocate for a review of the Child Rights Law to address contemporary challenges affecting children.

The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, announced the initiative during a meeting with the Speaker of the National Children’s Parliament, Progress Friday Umoh, on Friday, February 7, 2025, at the Government House, Uyo.

Obareki praised the Speaker’s efforts and pledged to collaborate with the national and state children’s parliaments to ensure that the Child Rights Law is updated to reflect current realities.

“These are the kinds of conversations we want to have in the Office of the First Lady because this is why we exist. I am happy that there is already a Child Rights Law, and I’m happy that you have highlighted the need for a review. That partnership is definitely approved, and I look forward to working with you,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Governor Umo Eno has declared all 31 local councils in the state winners of the 2024 Christmas Unplugged Season 2.0, Sights and Sounds of Local Council Areas competition.

Originally, the competition was meant to select the top three councils based on their presentations of cultural and tourism heritage. However, in a surprise announcement, the governor awarded each council N5 million, totaling N155 million in prizes.

The 32-day festival, held from December 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025, showcased the rich cultural heritage and tourism potential of Akwa Ibom’s local government areas.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Grace Akpan, described the governor’s decision as a demonstration of his benevolence and commitment to inclusive governance.
