Akpata Refutes Defection Rumours, Denies Link To APC In Edo Politics

Olumide Akpata, former Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, has strongly denied rumours of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpata, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former NBA president, dismissed the speculation as mischievous attempts by political detractors.

He said the rumour was fabricated on social media and deliberately spread by those seeking to tarnish his political reputation.

The Labour Party candidate contested the September 2024 governorship election but lost to the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo.

Despite his loss, Akpata’s campaign energized youths and strengthened the Labour Party’s presence in Edo’s evolving political landscape.

In a Tuesday statement, Akpata reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party, stressing he never considered defecting to the APC.

“This claim is false and laughable. I have neither contemplated nor discussed joining the APC,” Akpata declared firmly.

He emphasised that his political journey remained tied to the Labour Party, the platform that brought him into Edo politics.

Akpata insisted he had no interest in abandoning the ideals and movement that resonated with thousands of Edo citizens.

He described the rumours as deliberate distractions meant to derail his focus from constructive political engagement and grassroots consolidation.

Political observers note that Edo’s political climate remains tense, with the PDP consolidating after the 2024 governorship election.

Analysts believe rumours of defection are fueled by increasing realignments and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The APC, now controlling Edo’s governorship, is seen as a major force likely to attract defections from opposition ranks.

However, Akpata’s statement has reassured Labour Party supporters of his commitment to remain within the party.

He urged his supporters to ignore falsehoods and remain steadfast as he continues to contribute to Edo’s democratic development.

Akpata’s categorical denial underscores the ongoing battle of narratives shaping Edo politics ahead of 2027.
