AfBA Hails Onnoghen On Appointment As Honorary Professor By University Of South Africa

The African Bar Association (AfBA) has congratulated Hon. Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen (CJN Rtd) on his recent appointment as an Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of South Africa (UNISA).

The announcement came following Onnoghen’s participation in the university’s 10th Annual Law Conference, held from March 25 to 27, 2025, at its main campus in Pretoria. Justice Onnoghen, who was nominated by AfBA to deliver a keynote lecture at the event, earned the academic honour due to the impact of his presentation.

His lecture, titled “Winds of Change in Africa and 30 Years of Democracy in South Africa: Reflecting on the Challenges of Africa in the 21st Century”, was described by observers as scholarly, insightful, and timely.

AfBA President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddy Mark, praised Onnoghen’s appointment, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of his academic and professional contributions. He noted that the former Chief Justice had once again brought pride to Nigeria and Africa at large.

According to the University of South Africa, an Honorary Professor is someone with a proven record of academic or professional excellence who strengthens the institution’s prestige and forges valuable links between the university and global sectors in government, civil society, or business.

Founded over 150 years ago, UNISA is one of Africa’s oldest and most respected universities. Justice Onnoghen’s appointment marks another historic milestone in the institution’s efforts to recognise continental icons.

AfBA reaffirmed its support and expressed hope that Onnoghen would continue to shine in his new academic role. “As an African star and a gift from Nigeria,” the association said, “we wish you a successful tenure as Honorary Professor.”

This recognition follows years of distinguished judicial service and thought leadership by Justice Onnoghen across Africa’s legal landscape.
