Afam Osigwe, SAN Highlights Benefits Of The Remuneration Order 2023 At NBA Otukpo Branch Opening

In a compelling address at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Otukpo branch’s opening ceremony, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afam Osigwe emphasized the critical importance of the Remuneration Order 2023 for the legal profession in Nigeria.
Speaking on “The Benefits of Enforcement of the Remuneration Order 2023,” Osigwe detailed how this legislative effort is set to transform the landscape of legal practice.

Osigwe began by providing historical context, noting the long-standing challenges the legal profession has faced regarding fair compensation. He lauded the Remuneration Order 2023 as a pivotal step toward ensuring that lawyers receive adequate and equitable pay, addressing these enduring concerns.

One of the key benefits of enforcing the Remuneration Order, Osigwe highlighted, is the promotion of professional integrity and service quality within the legal sector. He asserted that adequate remuneration motivates lawyers to deliver high-caliber legal services, thereby elevating the overall standard of legal practice. This fair compensation framework also aims to reduce unethical practices that can arise from financial pressures.

Osigwe also emphasized the structured framework for legal fees introduced by the Remuneration Order, which fosters greater transparency and predictability. This structured approach benefits both lawyers and clients, who can now have a clearer understanding of legal costs, thus improving trust and the client-lawyer relationship.

Discussing the economic implications, Osigwe pointed out that the standardization of legal fees creates a more balanced and competitive market. This ensures that smaller law firms and independent practitioners are not outpriced by larger firms offering lower fees, promoting a level playing field essential for the sustainability of the profession, particularly for young lawyers and those in less affluent regions.

A significant point in Osigwe’s speech was the impact of the Remuneration Order on access to justice. He argued that fair compensation for lawyers indirectly enhances access to justice, as adequately remunerated lawyers are more inclined to take on pro bono cases and serve indigent clients. This, in turn, fosters a more inclusive legal system.

Concluding his address, Osigwe called on all stakeholders, especially those within the Otukpo Branch, to support the enforcement of the Remuneration Order 2023. He urged legal practitioners to adhere to the Order’s provisions and encouraged the NBA to actively monitor compliance and address any arising challenges. Through these efforts, he believes the legal profession in Nigeria will not only improve its standards but also enhance its public reputation and reliability.
