Man Sentenced To 15 Months In Prison For Stealing Mosque Praying Mat

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, the Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court, Abuja, handed down a 15-month jail term to Nasir Idris for the theft of a fan and praying mat from a mosque. The court also provided Mr. Idris with the option to pay a fine of N50,000.
The prosecution, led by Chinedu Ogada, detailed that Mr. Ali Zuma apprehended Mr. Idris on March 17 and brought him to the police station in Zuba, also located within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to Ogada, Mr. Idris unlawfully entered the mosque in Dei-Dei and made away with the fan and mat, but his attempt was foiled when he was caught in the act. During the subsequent investigation, Mr. Idris confessed to the crime, revealing that he had previously served prison sentences for theft on two occasions.
The prosecutor highlighted that Mr. Idris’s actions violated the Penal Code of the FCT.
In a plea for leniency, Mr. Idris admitted guilt and appealed for mercy from the court.
Presiding over the case, Judge Saminu Suleiman admonished Mr. Idris to refrain from criminal activities and urged him to conduct himself responsibly in the future.
