Adamawa Chief Judge Frees 156 Inmates During Correctional Centre Visits

The Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hasfat Abdulrahman, has released 156 inmates during a two-day visit to three correctional centres in Yola, the state capital. The initiative was part of the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee’s efforts to address overcrowding and expedite case reviews.

On Thursday, the committee discharged 32 inmates, granted bail to 16, and reviewed 26 cases at the Jimeta Correctional Centre. Many cases involved civil matters, with some inmates being assigned non-custodial sentences, including community service lasting from one to three months.

The Jimeta Correctional Centre, which has a capacity of 300 inmates, currently houses 392, significantly exceeding its limit. The Chief Judge emphasized that the exercise was aimed at easing congestion and encouraged the freed inmates to reform and avoid future criminal activities.

The Controller of Jimeta Correctional Centre, Mohammed Juta, noted that the exercise would help decongest the facility. On behalf of the released inmates, Emmanuel Adamu Makshan expressed gratitude to the Chief Judge, promising that they would exhibit good behavior moving forward.
