Activist Mahdi Shehu Arrested By DSS Over Viral Fake Video
Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations linked to a viral video deemed a national security concern.
Sources confirmed that Shehu was taken into custody over the weekend in Kaduna. The video in question reportedly contained false claims accusing the Nigerian government of plans to establish a French military base in the North-West region.
“Shehu is being held in Kaduna, and there are indications he may be arraigned in court on Monday or shortly thereafter,” a source familiar with the matter disclosed. Efforts to amicably resolve the situation reportedly failed before the activist’s arrest.
Officials stated that clear directives have been issued for Shehu’s prosecution. “Operatives have also been instructed to ensure his rights are not violated while in custody,” another source added.
This is not the first time Shehu has faced legal troubles. Earlier this year, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), accused him of attempted extortion.
Malami’s legal team alleged that Shehu attempted to extort €470,309.50 from Malami’s wife, Aisha, through criminal intimidation and deceptive communication using GSM numbers and emails. These allegations were made after Shehu, through his lawyer, claimed he was targeted for calling on President Bola Tinubu to probe former President Muhammadu Buhari and top officials of his administration.
The activist’s arrest has sparked public interest, with observers closely watching how the case unfolds, given its implications for freedom of speech and national security.
