Abia Lawmaker Issues Public Apology For Assaulting Bolt Driver
Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has publicly apologized after a viral video showed him assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, who had arrived to deliver a package at his residence. Acknowledging that his actions were inappropriate for a public official, Ikwechegh expressed regret and took full responsibility.
In his statement on Monday, Ikwechegh said, “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.” He also conveyed regret over the embarrassment his actions caused to Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the wider public.
Ikwechegh confirmed his cooperation with the police investigation, pledging to support efforts to ensure accountability. He expressed appreciation for the swift response from both the Nigerian Police and his party, highlighting their commitment to uphold the law.
Taking further steps to address the incident, Ikwechegh announced he would seek professional counseling to prevent future incidents and engage in community service initiatives focused on respect and empathy.
In his message to Nigerians, he urged for a collective commitment to fostering a culture of dignity and understanding. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he stated.
The incident, which occurred in Maitama, Abuja, has sparked public condemnation. The police, after summoning Ikwechegh for questioning, criticized him for invoking the Inspector General of Police’s name inappropriately during the altercation.
