Abia Judiciary Workers Call Off Strike After Agreement With State Government

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State chapter, has officially suspended its strike, allowing judicial activities to resume across the state.
The decision, outlined in a press statement signed by State Chairman, Prince Chinedu Ezeh, and State Secretary, Chibueze Nwachukwu, follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Abia State Government and the full payment of outstanding arrears related to the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage under the CONJUSS Scale for judiciary workers.
JUSUN commended Governor Alex Otti for his prompt intervention and reaffirmed its commitment to an independent, financially autonomous, and corruption-free judiciary.
The union also expressed gratitude to Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, the judiciary management, judges, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), senior advocates, and other key stakeholders for their support during the industrial action.
Courts across Abia had been shut since January 2, 2025, after JUSUN resumed its previously suspended strike from October 2024, citing stalled negotiations on salary adjustments.
With the new agreement in place, judicial services are set to resume immediately. However, JUSUN cautioned that it expects the full implementation of all terms agreed upon in the MoU to ensure lasting progress in the state’s judiciary.
