Abia Government Warns Against Fake News, May Enforce Cyber Security Laws

(Abia warns against fake news Cyber Laws). The Abia State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals about spreading false information, stating that they may face prosecution under Nigeria’s Cyber Laws.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, made this announcement on Monday during a press briefing at Government House, Abia, Umuahia, following this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu emphasized that the government has nothing to hide but is concerned about the misinformation and rights violations caused by fake news.
“This is to inform those who peddle falsehood that the time has come for them to desist from such unwholesome acts or be ready to face the full wrath of the law.”
He warns the public that authorities will enforce the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection Laws as part of the Nigerian legal framework where necessary.
“Such people need to be reminded of the Cyber Laws in our legal system, including the Cyber Security Act and Data Protection regulations,” Kanu added.
The warning signals the state government’s readiness to clamp down on the spread of fake news and ensure that information circulated within the state is accurate and responsible.
