CJN Calls For Judicial Collaboration To Remove Nigeria From FATF Grey List

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has called on the judiciary to take a leading role in combating financial crimes and preventing illicit financial flows.
Speaking in Abuja at a sensitization program on anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorism financing, and proliferation risk assessment, she emphasized the need for collaboration among judges, lawyers, law enforcement agencies, and anti-graft institutions to ensure Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List.
Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted the economic consequences of Nigeria’s continued listing, including reduced investor confidence and financial restrictions. She stated:
“Delisting is not just symbolic; it has far-reaching economic and reputational benefits. It will reinforce our commitment to financial transparency and integrity.”
The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Salisu Abdullahi, stressed that the judiciary’s role is crucial in supporting the federal government’s efforts to address financial crimes.
Additionally, Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs. Gill Lever, reaffirmed the UK’s support in Nigeria’s fight against money laundering, revealing that the country loses over $16 billion annually due to illicit financial activities.
