Emefiele’s Lawyers Accuse Justice Oshodi Of Bias, Demand Recusal From Trial

The legal team representing former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has accused Justice Abdulrahman Oshodi of bias and demanded that he recuse himself from the case.
At the resumed trial on Monday, Emefiele’s lead counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), filed an application urging Justice Oshodi to step down from further proceedings, citing statements allegedly made by the judge that suggested a pre-judgment of the case.
During the examination-in-chief of a witness, Adetola John, led by the prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Justice Oshodi reportedly stated in open court that the allegation of receiving bribe money had been proven against Emefiele.
Defence lawyers argue that such remarks, made before the case had concluded or cross-examination had commenced, indicate that the judge has already made up his mind on Emefiele’s guilt.
“This court has granted an accelerated hearing, but what we are witnessing is an accelerated sentencing,” Ojo stated.
Supporting the motion, Kazeem Gbadamosi (SAN) argued that Justice Oshodi’s remarks compromised the fairness of the trial, insisting that the judge should withdraw from the case.
Justice Oshodi has scheduled February 26 to deliver a ruling on the application for his recusal. The outcome will determine whether he continues presiding over Emefiele’s trial or steps aside.
