Anambra State Government Denies Authorizing Arrest Of Women Without Underwear
The Anambra State Government has dismissed claims that it authorized the arrest of women not wearing bras and underwear in public.
The clarification follows viral reports suggesting that a security outfit in the state had announced plans to detain women seen without undergarments. According to the reports, a town crier in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, had used a public address system to claim that the directive came from the state government.
In response, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, issued a statement debunking the claim, describing it as false, misleading, and unconnected to the state government or the Agunechemba Security outfit.
Opara emphasized that the government has no interest in such trivial matters, as they hold no legal basis. Instead, the administration remains focused on combating criminal activities and maintaining law and order across the state.
“The attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to a malicious and entirely false report claiming that the government has begun arresting girls who walk around without bras and pants. We wish to categorically state that this information is completely untrue and intended to mislead the public,” the statement read.
Opara reaffirmed Governor Soludo’s commitment to protecting the fundamental human rights and dignity of all citizens. While the government encourages decent dressing, he stressed that it does not interfere with personal choices regarding clothing or undergarments, as such matters are private and constitutionally protected.
The state government urged residents to disregard the false report and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information to help fight crime.
