Bauchi NGO Calls For Urgent Implementation Of VAPP And Child Protection Laws

Aid Connect for Development, a non-governmental organization, has urged the Bauchi State government to expedite the implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) and Child Protection laws.

During a roundtable discussion with stakeholders in Bauchi on Thursday, Executive Director Abigail Hardo emphasized the critical need for these laws to ensure the safety of children and girls in the state. “While Bauchi State has introduced the Child Protection Law, it has yet to be implemented,” she noted.

Hardo expressed concern over the delay, stating, “We felt it was necessary to bring stakeholders together to discuss why implementation has stalled and why these laws are not active in our schools.” She highlighted the importance of understanding strategies for implementing these laws and overcoming challenges.

The discussion also focused on the need for children to be aware of their rights to protection from violence. Hardo reiterated that communities, places of worship, and society as a whole must ensure children’s safety.

Maimuma Yusuf, Gender Desk Officer at the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice, pointed out that creating awareness is crucial for the effective implementation of these laws. She acknowledged that many people, even those educated, may not fully understand legal provisions.

Rev. Jibila Dani from Prevailing Faith Ministry International noted cultural and religious factors that hinder the implementation of these laws. He commended the state government for enacting these laws but urged for increased awareness efforts.

The VAPP and Child Protection laws were passed by the Bauchi State House of Assembly and assented to by Governor Bala Mohammed; however, they have not been effectively enforced. The NGO’s call for action highlights a growing concern for child safety and protection against violence in Bauchi State.
