Senior Lawyer Demands Refund Of N62 Million Allegedly Extorted By Enugu Police

Prominent constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Professor Mike Ozekhome, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding the immediate return of N62 million that he claims was extorted from his client, Mr. Olu Agwu, by officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Enugu State.
In a report by SaharaReporters, it was revealed that Agwu was allegedly forced to pay the extorted amount to various accounts linked to senior police officers to avoid repercussions. This disturbing trend reportedly involves labeling high-profile victims as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to facilitate extortion.
The Enugu State Police Command has denied these allegations in a rebuttal issued by spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe. However, SaharaReporters has uncovered additional information suggesting involvement from the state commissioner, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, in the alleged scheme.
Ozekhome’s petition highlights the serious implications of police misconduct and calls for accountability within the force. He is urging an investigation into the actions of the officers involved in Agwu’s illegal arrest and subsequent extortion.
The case has drawn significant attention as it underscores ongoing concerns regarding police corruption and abuse of power in Nigeria. As the situation develops, Ozekhome is advocating for justice and the protection of citizens’ rights against unlawful practices by law enforcement.
