NNPC Dismisses Viral Video Claiming Dangote Refinery’s Petrol Lasts Longer, Threatens Legal Action

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has debunked claims circulating in a viral video that petrol refined by Dangote Refinery and sold at MRS Oil stations lasts 13 minutes longer than the NNPC-supplied fuel.

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 15, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, described the claim as misleading, false, and baseless, warning that the company will take legal action against anyone spreading such misinformation.

The video, widely shared on social media, shows a Nigerian man conducting an unverified fuel efficiency test using two small generators, commonly known as ‘I better pass my neighbor’ generators.

According to him, petrol purchased from an MRS Oil station in Alapere, Lagos, at ₦925 per litre lasted significantly longer than the ₦945 per litre fuel he bought from an NNPC station in Ojojubega, Lagos.

He claimed:
“After 17 minutes and 51 seconds, the generator running on NNPC fuel shut down first, while the one using MRS fuel continued running for another 13 minutes.”

Dismissing the claims, Soneye stated that the experiment lacked scientific validity, professional oversight, and accuracy.

He emphasized that NNPC’s petrol is carefully formulated to meet global industry standards, ensuring efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, he clarified that a significant portion of the PMS sold at NNPC stations in Lagos is also sourced from Dangote Refinery, a strategic partner in promoting local production and energy security.

“Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, guaranteeing the quality of petroleum products supplied to consumers. This misleading video is a desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to misinform the public and tarnish NNPC Ltd’s reputation,” he said.

NNPC has vowed to take firm legal action against individuals or groups spreading false information about its operations.

“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation aimed at undermining our brand. Those engaged in such malicious activities will be held accountable under the law,” Soneye warned.

The company urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources for accurate information regarding fuel quality and pricing.
