Man Remanded For Severing Wife’s Hand In Enugu
A Chief Magistrate Court in Enugu has ordered the remand of Sunday Echeji, who was arraigned for attempted murder after allegedly severing his wife’s hand in a brutal act of domestic violence.
Echeji, who was arraigned on Friday, January 31, 2025, faces charges under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024.
The attack, which took place in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka LGA, has sparked widespread outrage. Due to the serious nature of the offense, the Chief Magistrate Court transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution for trial at the Enugu State High Court, citing lack of jurisdiction.
Echeji has since been remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre pending trial.
Reacting to the case, the First Lady of Enugu State, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, reaffirmed the government’s zero tolerance for violence against women.
“This kind of violence will not be tolerated in our state. Rest assured, we will ensure that justice is served. Anyone thinking of committing such an inhumane act should know that under this administration, you must face justice,” she stated.
The Enugu State Government, alongside civil society groups and law enforcement agencies, continues to strengthen legal protections and support survivors of domestic violence, aiming to set a strong precedent against gender-based violence.
