AGF Backs IGP Egbetokun’s Tenure Extension, Says It’s Lawful

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has defended the extended tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, affirming its legality under the amended Police Act.

In a statement personally signed on Thursday in Abuja, Fagbemi clarified that while Egbetokun is set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4, 2024, recent amendments to the Police Act ensure he serves out his full four-year term, which began on October 31, 2023.

“Before his retirement age, the Police Act was amended to allow the occupant of the office to remain and complete the original four-year term granted under Section 7 (6) of the Act, notwithstanding the fact that he has attained the age of 60 years,” Fagbemi stated.

He further explained that the 2024 amendment to the Police Act explicitly allows an IGP to serve a full term of four years, making Egbetokun’s tenure legally valid until October 31, 2027.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office is in line with the provisions of the amended Police Act, which grants a four-year term effective from the date of appointment as IGP,” he added.

The statement comes amid debates over the legality of Egbetokun’s continued stay in office, with the AGF’s position reinforcing the federal government’s stance on the matter.
