Group Urges Lagos Attorney General To Prosecute Obasa Over Claims He Remains Assembly Speaker

The Assembly of Lagos Youths has called on the Lagos State Attorney General to prosecute former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, for his assertion that he remains the rightful Speaker despite his impeachment.

Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, has since been sworn in as the new Speaker.

However, during a welcome event hosted by supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas, Obasa claimed his impeachment was unlawful, citing constitutional provisions as the basis for his stance.

Addressing supporters, Obasa stated, “I have been a parliamentarian for over two decades and the longest-serving member in the Lagos State House of Assembly. I believe in removal, but there was no impeachment. If you want to remove a Speaker, you must follow due process. I’m not afraid of being removed, but it must be done constitutionally.”

The Assembly of Lagos Youths, led by Convener Comrade Lasisi Robert, described Obasa’s remarks as reckless and an invitation to anarchy. “Mudashiru Obasa stands impeached, and there is no going back. He is no longer the Speaker of Lagos State. His tenure was marked by misuse of resources, including personal luxuries at the expense of the people,” the group said in a statement on Saturday.

The group emphasized that Obasa’s impeachment was carried out in line with constitutional provisions. “Section 92 of the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority of House members to remove a Speaker. In this case, 32 out of 39 members voted for his removal, fulfilling the constitutional requirement,” the statement read.

The group warned that Obasa’s statements could incite unrest and called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure the security of the Lagos State House of Assembly. “For him to declare himself Speaker after due process is treasonable. We urge the Governor to beef up security around the Assembly to prevent any breakdown of law and order.”

The Assembly of Lagos Youths also urged the Attorney General to commence legal action against Obasa, describing his comments as a “reckless challenge to the rule of law.”

Meanwhile, the group cautioned against any potential mobilisation of thugs or disruption at the House of Assembly, which could lead to further tensions in the state.
