Trump Administration Fires Lawyers Who Investigated Him
The administration of United States President Donald Trump has dismissed over a dozen Justice Department lawyers who were involved in two high-profile criminal cases against him.
The lawyers, who served under former Special Counsel Jack Smith, were investigating allegations of Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Acting Attorney General James McHenry announced the terminations, citing their roles in prosecuting the cases against Trump.
Jack Smith, appointed as special counsel in 2022 to oversee the investigations, resigned before Trump’s inauguration, following the president’s public vow to remove him “within two seconds” of taking office.
The investigations resulted in criminal charges against Trump, who pleaded not guilty in both cases. However, the lawsuits were dropped after his victory in the November election, as Justice Department policies prohibit prosecuting a sitting president.
The firings have drawn significant attention, with critics questioning the administration’s move to target those who investigated the president. The Justice Department has yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
