NALT Aims To Elevate Standards For Law Teachers, Inaugurates Committee For 56th Annual Conference

The Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) is set to use its 56th Annual Conference as a platform to raise professional standards for law teachers across Nigeria. This commitment was underscored during the inauguration of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), chaired by Prof. Uwakwe Abugu, Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Abuja.

The LOC, led by Dr. Eugene Okolocha, Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law at UNIABUJA, includes law lecturers from the University of Abuja and faculties in other states like Nasarawa and Taraba. The committee is tasked with ensuring a well-organized and impactful conference.

At the inauguration ceremony, held at the Faculty of Law, University of Abuja, Prof. Abugu shared goodwill messages from UNIABUJA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi and NALT President Prof. Simisola Akintola of the University of Ibadan. Both pledged their support to make the conference a success.

Prof. Abugu emphasized the significance of hosting the event in Abuja, calling it a unifying effort to bridge regional divides and a recognition of UNIABUJA’s capacity to host a national event. He expressed confidence that the 56th conference would surpass previous editions in attendance, hospitality, and quality of sessions, dubbing it “Better than the Best.”

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Prof. Abugu called for the collective dedication of LOC members and urged them to leave no stone unturned. He stated, “If this conference has been held for 56 years and Abuja is hosting for the first time, we don’t have any excuse to fail. Ours must be the best.”

Keynote Speaker Prof. Abdulkadir Abikan, Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, stressed the importance of early preparation, cautioning against last-minute efforts. Drawing from his own experience as a former LOC chair, he highlighted that effective planning, networking, and timely registration by participants are critical to the conference’s success.

“While the 56th NALT Conference has the potential to set new standards, this ambition must be supported by proactive actions from stakeholders, particularly the LOC and participants,” Prof. Abikan said.

He also urged the LOC to engage individuals and organizations for support and encouraged participants to register early to facilitate smooth planning for accommodation, conference materials, and logistics.

Lecturers at the event echoed the need for a web-based portal to provide timely information for interested participants, drawing lessons from the successes and challenges of the previous conference held in Ilorin.

With preparations underway, the 56th NALT Annual Conference aims to redefine excellence in legal education and professional collaboration.
