African Court To Open 2025 Judicial Year With Focus On Reparations

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is set to formally inaugurate its 2025 Judicial Year with a solemn ceremony scheduled for February 3, 2025. The event will take place at the Court’s headquarters in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.

The theme for the 2025 Judicial Year is “Advancing Justice through Reparations.” The ceremony will feature His Excellency José Maria Pereira Neves, President of the Republic of Cape Verde, as the Guest of Honour.

As part of the opening activities, the Court will host a Judicial Seminar titled “Rendering Justice for Women through Reparations.” This discussion will highlight the importance of reparations as a means to address injustices faced by women across the continent.

Additionally, the Court will deliver eight judgments that were adopted during its 75th Ordinary Session.

To ensure inclusivity, all events—the Solemn Ceremony, the Judicial Seminar, and the delivery of judgments—will adopt a hybrid format, enabling participants to join either in person or virtually.

Dignitaries expected to attend include representatives from African Union Member States, international, regional, and national courts, African Union organs with human rights mandates, as well as national human rights institutions.

The opening of the Judicial Year underscores the African Court’s commitment to promoting justice and human rights across the continent, with a special focus this year on reparations and gender justice.
