Retired Shariah Court Judge Accused Of Assaulting Blind Woman Granted Bail
A retired Upper Shariah Court Judge, Mahmoud Shehu, accused of assaulting a blind housewife, has been granted bail by a Magistrate’s Court in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Adamu Salisu set the bail conditions, requiring Shehu to provide two civil servant sureties on Grade Level 10, deposit ₦100,000, and ensure the submission of promotion letters, passport photographs, residential addresses, and telephone numbers by the sureties. Failure to meet these conditions would result in Shehu’s remand at a correctional facility until the next hearing on February 11, 2025.
Shehu faces charges of criminal trespass, assault, and use of force under Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.
Prosecutor Adamu Abubakar alleged that on September 6, 2024, Shehu forcibly entered the residence of the blind woman, locked the main gate, and assaulted her. He reportedly attacked two other women who attempted to intervene, leaving the victim with injuries that required treatment at the Tudun Wada Primary Health Centre.
Shehu, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was initially arraigned on September 10, 2024, at the Magistrate’s Court in Tudun Wada, Zaria, before Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi. However, the case faced delays and was transferred to the Chief Magistrate’s Court 1, Chediya, for reassignment after Magistrate Sidi withdrew from the case for undisclosed reasons.
The next hearing is expected to delve into the details of the allegations and Shehu’s plea, as the court seeks to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
